Content Directories - GUI wrapperv1.0.0

Overview

The Content Directories - GUI wrapper is an editor extension for Unity 6.6+. It is capable of packing content into asset packs using Unity's built-in Content Directories system. It features a clean editor GUI, which can be used to manage the content builds.

What can this extension do?

This extension -
  1. Includes all the boilerplate code that is required to implement Content Directories.
  2. Provides a simple interface to perform all the actions offered by Content Directories.
  3. Keeps track of root asset packs and thier related settings.
  4. Enables deleting builds without having to leave the editor and navigate to the build directory.

What you still have to do yourself?

You need to perform the following implementations yourself at appropriate points considering the structure of your project -
  1. Writing ScriptableObjects for Root Assets.
  2. Performing Registration and De-registration calls for the various content directories you have created.
  3. Performing Load and Unload calls for all the assets and scenes you want loaded and unloaded at any given moment.
Note: The Release() method must be called on all the Loadables that were loaded using Load() or LoadAsync() methods when it is no longer required.
  4. Instantiating the assets.

Current limitations and future plans.

While this extension cuts down on the time needed to be spent on setting up content directories in a new project and managing packs in existing ones, Unity's Content Directories does not have the ability to stream assets remotely. By extension this system also lacks that capability. There are two futures for this asset going forward. If Unity implements these user-friendly features natively in Unity 7 generation, this asset will become obsolete. Or they continue to improve only the back end, keeping it customizable and extensible and this extension also grows with those updates.
